Alarm Systems in Your Community

Alarm systems for fire, burglary and personal emergency response systems help protect people and assets inside of homes, businesses and public facilities in your community.

The effectiveness of an alarm system relies not only on quick recognition of “triggered events” for a variety of sensors, but also the quick response by emergency personnel.

Unfortunately, some dispatches turn out to be unwarranted. However, a good deal of alarm dispatches by central stations to prove to be true emergencies that require immediate response, which is a vital function that makes our communities safer.

Alarm Ordinances

Should your community find that too great a percentage of alarm dispatches turn out to be false, an effective solution is to implement an alarm ordinance that governs who may install alarm systems and addresses end-users who have an abundance of false alarms generated from their system.

The best resource for communities looking at an alarm ordinance is the Security Industry Alarm Coalition (SIAC). SIAC has worked closely with agencies such the International Association of Chiefs of Police, National Sheriffs Association and False Alarm Reduction Association to develop and refine successful elements for a solid alarm ordinance that will reduce false dispatches, and in many cases allow for cost recovery.

Called the NBFAA-FARA Model Ordinance, it is estimated that more than a thousand response agencies have used part or all of it to significantly reduce alarms in all parts of the country.
